Hydrology is a science and requires very specialized training and education. Any path of scientific study begins early. It is necessary to foster a solid foundation in the tenets and techniques of the scientific method in high school. Though high schools do not typically offer hydrology courses, they do offer the introductory sciences without a basic understanding of which it is impossible to proceed to college-level scientific study of any kind. Undergraduate schools typically do not offer a major in hydrology, but in related sciences (such as environmental science, atmospheric science) that prepare students for graduate level work in hydrology.
